The Scalarea Estate lies in Skalani, a few kilometres off the center of Heraklion city and just 4 km from the archaeological site of Knossos and is the jewel of the viticultural PDO region of Archanes.
The presence in Crete and its involvement with the Cretan vineyard began in 1990 with the planting of the privately owned Boutari vineyard in Skalani, which is today called Scalarea Estate. The name that was given to the place “Fantaxometocho” was taken by the legend that was created in order to protect the domain from pirates. In Greek, “Fantaxometocho” means “the haunted domain”.
The main objective was to set the foundations for further promotion of Cretan wine worldwide, through the production of high quality wines. In a region that was famous for its ecosystem and its tradition in viticulture, we managed to enhance the potential of local varieties and made Cretan vineyards known to the broader public, through major distinctions.
The estate covers an area of 6.6 hectares and stretches on the north side of a low hill, a location protecting the vines from the warm southern winds of the Libyan Sea, while allowing the cool, beneficial sea breezes “meltemia” of the Cretan sea. The Boutari Winery in Crete was completed in early 2004 and is a “state of the art” winery.
Visitors can enjoy a tour of the cellar, the production area and the rest of the estate. A visit to the wine-tasting hall is definitely worthwhile, to enjoy the wines of the Estate, including the experimental ones, accompanied by dishes from the renowned Cretan cuisine.

Write a reviewWe visited the Scalaria winery during our honeymoon trip to Crete and did a wine tasting. The site was easy to access from the highway and there was a parking area right at the front. The staff were all very kind and made the experience very educational. The views from the winery were spectacular, and the history of the winery was very interesting. The wines were all very tasty, so much so that we chose to purchase 12 bottles to be shipped back to our home in the US. We would highly recommend visiting the Scalaria winery when visiting Crete as a way to learn more about the wine culture within Greece.

Our first experience with a wine tasting and we thought it was more than a success! Booked a day in advance with the 30€ pp package. The guide was able to explain the winemaking process well during the tour and tasting. Very friendly and helpful man! The wines were very tasty and especially the food was well selected with the wines. The location is beautiful and not too cold or hot. We bought 3 good wines for home, so it is definitely recommended!
