Crafting Exceptional Wines in Macedonia
Located at the base of Mount Paiko in Goumenissa, Ktima Tatsis is a family-owned winery that reflects the rich vinicultural heritage of the region. Just 65 km from Thessaloniki, Goumenissa has a population of around 4,500 and has evolved into a notable wine-producing area since its establishment during the early years of Turkish rule. The arrival of refugees from Eastern Romilia and Pontos between 1922 and 1925 further enriched the local winemaking traditions.
A Legacy of Winemaking
The Tatsis family's connection to viticulture dates back generations to Ano Vodeno in Eastern Romilia, a region known for its wine production. In 1924, the family settled in Goumenissa, acquiring vineyards on the fertile hills of Libaskerit and Gerakona. These vineyards, characterized by calcareous, non-irrigated soil, were initially tended by the grandfather and are now managed by his son Christos and grandsons Periclis and Stergios.
Organic and Biodynamic Practices
Since 1998, Ktima Tatsis has cultivated its vineyards following organic farming principles, earning certification for its practices. In 2002, the winery adopted biodynamic methods, producing between 3,000 to 7,000 kilos of grapes per hectare. The winemaking process occurs in the family’s traditional winery, with wines aged in oak barrels to enhance their character and complexity.
