Discover the rich history and unique terroir of Masseria Cuturi in Puglia, Italy.
Founded in 1881 by Tommaso Schiavoni Tafuri, a prominent landowner from Manduria, Masseria Cuturi has deep roots in the Salento region of Puglia. Tommaso married Countess Sabini, who brought with her prized Primitivo "rooted cuttings" as part of her dowry. These cuttings were planted in the fertile Conca D'Oro, marking the beginning of a legacy that would produce some of the most robust and flavorful wines in the area. The Primitivo grape, known for its early ripening, quickly became a local favorite, celebrated for its rich, full-bodied character.
By the late 19th century, the vineyard spanned approximately 100 hectares, cultivated with care and dedication by the community. Masseria Cuturi has consistently pursued excellence, embracing new technologies and earning numerous accolades throughout its history.
In 2007, our family took on the challenge of revitalizing the estate, which had lost its vineyards. Today, we proudly cultivate 40 hectares of vines, honoring the heritage of the past while looking toward the future.
The Conca d’Oro is renowned for its fertile soils, nourished by five artesian wells and two natural springs, making it a truly bountiful land. The current vineyard benefits from a unique microclimate created by the ancient forest of Cuturi, a protected nature reserve along the eastern Salento coast.
Our vineyard is a single plot located near the Ionian Sea, surrounded by traditional dry stone walls that delineate the various sections. Here, we grow ancient Primitivo clones, each with distinct characteristics. The soil composition varies, featuring dark clay and marly, slightly silty areas, rich in organic matter. To maintain balance, we plant grasses that aerate the roots and foster healthy competition among the vines.
We practice organic farming, focusing on preserving the natural organic content of the soil and enhancing biodiversity. This commitment ensures that our wines reflect the unique terroir of Masseria Cuturi, offering a true taste of Puglia.
