Founded in 2004 by Christopher Price and Helga Wagner, Vinhos Cortém is a charming organic winery nestled in the picturesque valleys and hills just east of Caldas da Rainha. Spanning 4.5 hectares, this small-scale operation produces around 15,000 bottles of wine annually. While the owners lack formal viticulture training, their dedication shines through as they have immersed themselves in the craft by attending seminars, engaging with fellow winemakers, and learning through hands-on experience in every aspect of winemaking.

Grape Varieties Grown at Vinhos Cortém

The winery focuses on crafting wines that embody the unique characteristics of their terroir. The region's Atlantic climate, combined with its rich soil and ideal rainfall, creates perfect conditions for vine cultivation. Late harvesting enhances the structure and acidity of their wines. The vineyards are home to a diverse range of grape varieties, including Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cão, Jaen, Syrah, Merlot, Aragonez, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Tannat, Carmenere, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Only the finest grapes are selected for their premium red and white wines.

Fermentation and Aging Techniques

At Vinhos Cortém, grapes are handpicked, destemmed, and crushed before fermentation begins in open 1000-liter tubs. The pressing process is done manually, ensuring careful treatment of the fruit. Wines are aged for two years in stainless steel tanks, followed by certification from the Lisbon Wines Commission before bottling. Vinhos Cortém exemplifies how passion, meticulous attention to detail, and hard work can result in outstanding wines.
