A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Lisbon's Wine Country
Viúva Gomes: A Rich Heritage
Founded in 1808, Adega Viúva Gomes is nestled in Almoçageme, Colares, within a designated wine-growing region established in 1908. This area is renowned for its unique dunes and sandy soils, located along the stunning coastline of Sintra, stretching from Cabo da Roca to Magoito. Colares has a long-standing connection to winemaking, with records indicating that wine production dates back to the Roman Empire. In 1230, King D. Afonso III mandated the planting of vines, further solidifying the region's viticultural significance. By the late 19th century, Colares gained recognition for its resilience against the phylloxera crisis, thanks to its deep-rooted vineyards that could reach up to 8 meters into the sandy soil, protecting them from the pest that devastated many European vineyards.
The Wines of Viúva Gomes
Today, the winery is managed by the fourth and fifth generations of winemakers—a father and son duo dedicated to preserving the traditional Colares wine style. Their commitment to creativity and sustainability ensures the longevity of this unique wine-growing region. Each bottle reflects the winery's character, values, and personal tastes, with a focus on minimal intervention during the winemaking process. The team believes that authentic wines are a true representation of their terroir, showcasing the distinct flavors and qualities of the Colares region.
