The Winery

The Rieger estate in Buggingen Betberg has been in the family for generations. In the 1980s, the estate changed from a traditional mixed agricultural business to a winery with a Besenwirtschaft and bottled wine marketing. In 2001, Philipp, the youngest of the three children, decided to follow in his parents‘ footsteps. And together they have managed the winery organically since 2005, according to Ecovin guidelines. Since 2010 we have been working biodynamically and are certified according to the
DEMETER guidelines. In 2013, the generation change followed and Philipp took over the management of the winery. The signs pointed to expansion and the winery grew from 3 to 25 hectares. With the new vinotheque and the cellar expansion 2018 till 2020, the way was paved for the future.

Biodynamic

For us, biodynamic means a holistic view of the vineyard and winery ecosystem. Bernhard Rieger describes it: „Like humans, the vine also needs an environment in which it feels comfortable in order to develop healthily. This is the only way to produce grapes of the highest quality.“ Through species-rich greening, we create habitat for insects and provide food for soil life. The active humus build-up binds
large amounts of CO2, retains water and nutrients and thus sustainably increases soil fertility. Biodynamic preparations of quartz rock, stinging nettle, sheep‘s gift or chamomile promote the health of the vine and the ripening of the grapes. Another important point in our farm philosophy is working according to the lunar calendar. In the vineyard, this supports the rhythm of the vines and promotes their vitality.
In the cellar, we align most of our work with the phases of the moon. In this way, we avoid oenological cosmetics and produce unadorned wines with real character.

The people

A winery needs people who support and shape it. In addition to Philipp and his parents Bernhard and Josepha, Manfred, Philipp‘s uncle, and meanwhile Philipp‘s older sister Stefanie and her husband Stephan also work in the family business. Cellar master Markus Brauchle has been working with Philipp in the cellar for a long time. Volker Girod is an allrounder in the vineyard and logistics, while Claudia Zimmermann takes care of marketing and sales.

Dear Weingut Rieger team, thank you very much for the excellent champagne breakfast. There really wasn't anything missing. From the family atmosphere to the many homemade delicacies, just to name a few, the delicious yeast plait, the carrot-nut bread, beetroot dip, etc. Even vegetarians were thought of and of course, the appropriate champagne clothing for the individual courses. All in all a very successful event. Keep it up, we'll be happy to come back.

Are you a wine connoisseur? Do you expect the interplay between the earth, the vine and the skills of the winemaker? Aside from wine, do you want to experience a professional location or theme-related events that you associate with wine? Then there is another answer in the region: Rieger❗️ The Rieger winery is impressively maintained and managed by a managing director Phillipp with a far-sighted passion without absolute humanity for vine and wine with his family for generations. Wine connoisseurs know this number one among you and can only recommend it❗️❗️❗️☀️
