The First Winery in Crete Crafting Premium Organic Greek Wines
Women at the Helm
Nestled in the stunning countryside of Crete, Domaine Paterianakis is a women-led winery located in Melesses, just a short drive from the historic Knossos Minoan Palace. This winery is celebrated for its organic red, white, and rosé wines, all crafted by the talented women of the Paterianakis family. Guests can also enjoy a stay in one of the three luxurious suites available on-site, perfect for wine tourism enthusiasts.
A Legacy of Grape Cultivation
The Paterianakis family has a rich history in grape farming, with ancestors who sold grapes to local vinification factories in Melesses. In 1988, Giorgos Paterianakis revitalized the family estate by replanting the vineyards using organic methods. By 1990, he enhanced the winery with a new vinification house, bottling areas, and underground barrel storage. Today, Emmanouella Paterianakis leads the winery alongside her sisters, Niky and Georgia. Emmanouella, who studied oenology at the University of Athens, joined the family business in 2001. Niky, a chemical engineer, manages wine tourism and the tasting room, while Georgia oversees sales across Greece and organizes special wine tastings.
Organic Winemaking Pioneers
The Paterianakis family is dedicated to preserving native grape varieties, including rare ones, while also introducing new selections. Their vineyards feature carefully chosen vines such as Vidiano, Thrapsathiri, Moschato Spinas, Sauvignon Blanc, Assyrtiko, Kotsifali, Mandilari, and Syrah. Committed to biodiversity, the winery employs biodynamic practices in its vineyards. Additionally, they continually expand their collection with new natural wines and organic spirits.
