Owned and Operated by Women
Located in a mesmerizing countryside in the mainland of Crete, Domaine Paterianakis is a woman-run winery based in Melesses, a short drive away from Knossos Minoan Palace, within the Peza PDO wine region. The winery is renowned for its organic red, white, and rose wines produced by females of the Paterianakis family. Inside the Domaine, three luxurious suites are built for the wine tourism guests.
Grape Farming Has Been Running in the Paterianakis Family’s Blood for Years
Ancestors of the Paterianakis family used to cultivate grapes and sell them to the nearby vinification factories in Melesses. Giorgos, the current owner, replanted the old vineyards in 1988 with organic practices. Later in 1990, he valorized the estate by constructing a new vinification house, bottling areas, underground storehouses for barrels, and much more. Today, Emmanuela Paterianakis runs the family winery, accompanied by her sisters, Niky and Georgia. She joined the business in 2001 after studying oenology at the University of Athens.
A Pioneer in Winemaking from Organic Grapes
Over the years, the Paterianakis family has preserved all the native grape varieties, including the rare ones, and gradually added more. Some of the carefully selected vines are Vidiano, Thrapsathiri, Moschato Spinas, Sayvignon Blanc, Assyrtiko, Kotsifali, Mandilari, and Syrah. The company follows biodynamic practices in the vineyards with respect to biodiversity. Now and then, the winery adds a new family of natural wines and organic spirits to its collection.
