Herdade Grande is a stunning agricultural estate located just 5 km from Vidigueira in the Alentejo region. Covering 350 hectares, the estate includes 60 hectares of vineyards, 60 hectares of olive groves, and the rest dedicated to grazing sheep and natural landscapes. This family-owned estate has been in the Lança family for nearly a century, having been established in 1920 by Ernesto dos Santos Lança. Today, his grandson, António M. B. Lança, who holds a degree in Agronomy from the Instituto Superior de Agronomia in Lisbon, oversees the estate and its wine production.
Since replanting the vineyards in 1980, Herdade Grande has cultivated 24 grape varieties—12 white and 12 red—selected for their suitability to the region's unique terroir. This dedication to quality ensures that each wine captures the true spirit of Alentejo.
The estate benefits from a microclimate influenced by the Mendro mountain range, which provides cooler nights than typical for Alentejo. Additionally, refreshing winds from the Atlantic coast create an ideal environment for grape growing. The estate's poor, schist soils enhance the mineral character and freshness of the wines. Herdade Grande produces between 450,000 and 500,000 bottles annually, with 30% white and 70% red wines, all crafted with a commitment to quality from vine to bottle.
