Welcome to Strataridakis Winery, a place where the wild beauty of Crete meets a legacy of passionate viticulture. Located in Kastelliana, Heraklion, we are proud to be the southernmost winery in Europe.
Our estate sits at the foot of the majestic Asterousia Mountains, where the warm Aegean sun is tempered by the cooling breezes of the Libyan Sea, creating a microclimate unlike anywhere else on the continent.
The Strataridakis family has been stewards of this "blessed" land since 1955. Originally used for traditional agriculture, the property, which once belonged to the historic Sinai Monastery has been carefully nurtured for decades.
It was the vision of brothers Costis and Manolis Strataridakis to transform this family heritage into a world-class vineyard. By blending their deep-rooted respect for the soil with modern oenological science, they have turned these rugged slopes into a sanctuary for indigenous Cretan grapes, creating a state-of-the-art facility that remains warm and welcoming.
The "red soil" of our vineyards and the unique microclimate of the Asterousia foothills allow us to produce wines with incredible character and aromatic intensity. We specialize in:
- Moschato Spinas (Muscat of Spina): Our flagship white. Elegant, dry, and world-renowned for its floral complexity.
- Vidiano: The rising star of Crete, producing rich, creamy whites with notes of stone fruit.
- Local Blends: We craft powerful reds by pairing local Kotsifali with international varieties like Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, resulting in our award-winning Ichnilatis, Kokkina Chomata and Barbatus.
Based on your website and the specific history of your land, here is a professional, updated description for your Winetourism.com profile. This version emphasizes your 70-year family connection to the land and the unique technical details that make your winery world-class.
Strataridakis Winery: A Legacy at Europe’s Southern Frontier
Welcome to Strataridakis Winery, a landmark of Cretan viticulture located in Kastelliana, Heraklion. As the southernmost winery in Europe, our estate offers a unique intersection of history, geography, and modern winemaking excellence.
Our History: From Sacred Land to World-Class Wine
The Strataridakis family’s connection to this "blessed" soil began in 1955 when our father, Aristides, acquired the land. These fields, once the monastic vineyards of the historic Sinai Monastery of the Holy Apostles, were carefully tended for decades before brothers Costis and Manolis Strataridakis—both trained agriculturists—realized their dream. In 2007, we inaugurated our state-of-the-art winery, transforming 500 acres of family heritage into an "endless tasting journey."
The Terroir: Where the Night Rests the Vines
Our vineyards are nestled at the foot of the Asterousia Mountains, ranging in altitude from 180 to 500 meters. The terroir here is defined by:
- The Microclimate: Intense day-to-night temperature variations (often exceeding 20°C) allow our grapes to "rest" and develop complex aromatic profiles.
- The Soil: Rich clay-loam soils that impart a distinct minerality and structure to our wines.
- The Varieties: We specialize in the rare and elegant Moschato Spinas, alongside Cretan stars like Vidiano, Vilana, Assyrtiko, and Kotsifali. We also cultivate international favorites such as Syrah, Merlot, and Chardonnay, all harvested exclusively by hand.
