A Scenic Retreat in Sicily's Heart
Poggio di Bortolone is nestled in the picturesque hills of the Hyblaean Mountains, near Chiaramonte Gulfi in the Ragusa province of South-Eastern Sicily. Spanning 60 acres, this winery is surrounded by lush olive groves and vibrant vineyards, creating a stunning landscape enhanced by the flowing Para Para River.
A Rich Heritage of Winemaking
Founded in the late 18th century by the Cosenza family during Sicily's transition from feudalism, Poggio di Bortolone has been passed down through generations. Today, Pierluigi Cosenza, the son of Ignazio, continues the family legacy, ensuring that the winery remains a cherished part of Sicilian culture.
Innovations in Winemaking
In the 1970s, Ignazio Cosenza revitalized the estate, renaming it Poggio di Bortolone and launching its first vintage in 1982. He introduced modern techniques, replacing traditional oak and chestnut vats with stainless steel, enhancing the quality of the wines. In 2005, the winery achieved the prestigious Denomination of Origin Controlled and Guaranteed (DOCG) status. The Cosenza family has cultivated vines, olive groves, and wheat for over a century, producing exceptional red and rosé wines from 15 hectares of vineyards planted with Nero d’Avola, Syrah, Cabernet, Petit Verdot, and Grosso Nero. Wine lovers will find Poggio di Bortolone a captivating destination for a memorable experience in Sicilian winemaking.
