History of Cantina Luca Gentile
Founded on February 2, 1960, by Luca Gentile, this winery began as a collaboration among 25 local farmers dedicated to promoting Puglia's unique grape varieties. Over the years, it has grown to include 400 members, sourcing grapes from 500 winegrowers in the surrounding municipalities. Today, Cantina Luca Gentile processes around 6 million kilograms of grapes annually, producing a diverse range of wines that reflect the region's rich heritage.
Unique Terroir of Puglia
The vineyards thrive in the Gioia del Colle DOC region, characterized by calcareous soil rich in minerals. This ideal terroir, combined with traditional espalier and albarello vine training methods, allows for the cultivation of exceptional Primitivo grapes. The best grapes are handpicked at peak ripeness and brought to the cellar, where skilled winemakers apply both modern techniques and time-honored traditions to create high-quality wines.
Winemaking Techniques
At Cantina Luca Gentile, meticulous care is taken at every stage of the winemaking process. Manual harvesting ensures that only the finest grapes are selected. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled cement vats, while aging takes place in small oak barrels, allowing the wines to develop their unique character. The winery produces a variety of wines, including red, white, rosé, and specialty collections such as Superior, Talents, Classic, and 100 Berries.
