One of the Oldest Wineries in Santorini

Gavalas Winery, a family-owned establishment, stands as one of the oldest wineries in Santorini, nestled in the charming village of Megalochori. The Gavalas family is dedicated to honoring the unique terroir of Santorini, producing wines in small quantities to ensure the highest quality.

Rich Terroirs and Unique Varieties

At Gavalas Winery, skilled winemakers craft some of Greece's most vibrant wines, including Assyrtiko, Aidani, Mandilaria, and Mavrotragano. Notably, Gavalas is the only winery in Santorini that vinifies the rare indigenous grape varieties of Katsano and Voudomato. The region's mild winters and long, hot summers, combined with low rainfall, contribute to traditionally low yields. The high moisture levels in the soil allow it to retain water, nourishing the vines throughout the day.

A Range of Award-Winning Wines

The winery produces an impressive selection of wines, including Santorini, Santorini Natural Ferment, Nykteri, Aidani, Katsano, Posta, Voudomato, Mavrotragano, and Vinsanto. Each wine reflects the estate's commitment to quality and has received numerous awards both in Greece and internationally. Wine enthusiasts visiting the stunning Greek islands should not miss the opportunity to experience the beauty of Gavalas Winery and its exceptional wines, which pair beautifully with local cuisine.

Typical Santorini structure and interesting to visit, good description of the wines for tasting with several anecdotes about the viticulture of the island. Decent vin santo but the wine that I preferred was their Assyrtiko.

We went to a wine tasting on Wednesday. We made the appointment very spontaneously the day before. Unfortunately, we had to postpone the appointment by 2 hours at short notice, which was very easy and uncomplicated to sort out with a quick phone call. The winery itself is small and super beautiful! The tasting takes place at the table and the staff are happy to advise you on which tasting is the right one. We were given bread, cheese and olives to go with the wine and a lot of really great background information. The only thing that was lost was the acoustics because another table (group of 6-7 people) was just quite loud. But since you could ask questions, that wasn't a problem. The wines are absolutely surprising and really something special - highly recommended! The short tour was also exciting and very informative for us. We would do it again - a very warm family-run winery that is absolutely worth a visit!

Nadia was so kind to accommodate our last minute walk-in for a tasting. She explained each of the wines in a way that was both informative and relatable and we loved all of them. Loved the cool indoor seating and the friendly staff, would recommend to any friend
