Story Dating Back to 1889 – Bodegas Valdemar Winery
Bodegas Valdemar Winery has 130 years of history which began on a small, narrow stone track in Oyón. The story of wine began back in 1889 with Joaquín Martínez Bujanda, the first generation of the winery, who at the time, was already making wine in Oyón, the family’s native town. His son Marcelino followed in his steps, as did his grandson Jesús who, along with his son of the same name, and currently chairman of the winery, set up Bodegas Valdemar in the 1980s.
At present, the fourth and fifth generation of Bodegas Valdemar Winery are working alongside management of the winery to create incredible Spanish wines.
the First Non-American Winery to Established in Walla Walla, Washington
At present, Jesús Martínez Bujanda, fourth generation, along with his children Jesús and Ana, continue to forge ahead in their eagerness to surprise and enchant consumers. They strive to create novelties that offer something personal, a distinguishing touch in the wine industry. Jesús Martinez Bujanda created one such novelty when he produced the first white wine fermented in barrels, and then later went on to launch the first Maturana and White Tempranillo varietal wines. The pioneering gene that drove Jesús Martínez Bujanda to break the mold back in the 1980s by producing these emblematic wines, has clearly been inherited by his children, Ana and Jesús. Both are responsible for expanding the winery’s horizon by embarking on wine production in Walla Walla, USA, thus becoming the first non-American owned winery established in Washington State.
