The story behind LJ Crafted Wines
The story behind the winery started when the Jooste family, Lowell and Anne, relocated to La Jolla in 2012, from Cape Town in South Africa. They had experience in managing vineyards because of the time spent in Klein Constantia and Anwilka vineyards along with two French winemakers. Lowell is the 4th-generation in a wine-focused family and has experience in international winemaking thanks to his long career in South Africa. The winery was started with the aim of reducing the impact on the environment during production by using new methods.
Innovative practices at the winery
Their goal is to establish a high-quality wine business with all the packaging being re-useable. To achieve this, they buy grapes in Napa Valley & Sonoma, use a custom crush facility in Napa and when the wine is ready, ship the full barrels to La Jolla, San Diego. Using patented equipment, they serve all the wines directly out the barrel by the glass or into re-useable bottles. In 4.5 years they have saved over 80,000 single-use bottles from production & disposal. The City of San Diego honoured the winery for its outstanding efforts aimed at waste reduction.
The company’s wines
The main grapes used by the winery are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon. These grapes are used to make their red, white, and rose wines. The winery’s logo features a pelican that is a symbol of their home. Apart from saving the environment, their wines are exquisite, and many people visit the estate for tastings and tours.
