A Historic Winery with a 400-Year-Old Cellar in Mittelrhein
The Lorenz family operates Weingut Toni Lorenz, managing approximately 5 hectares of vineyards in the steep slopes of the Bopparder Hamm region. While modern machinery has made some tasks easier, the steep terrain often limits its use, making hand cultivation essential. With care and dedication, they grow a variety of grapes, including Riesling, Spätburgunder, Rivaner, and Grauburgunder. ### Wines Reflecting the Terroir In the winery's historic 400-year-old cross-vaulted cellar, built in the 16th century, winemaker Joachim Lorenz skillfully combines modern techniques with traditional methods. Utilizing stainless steel tanks, fermentation cooling, and gentle pressing, he also ages wines in classic wooden barrels. The result is a range of vibrant and expressive Rieslings, from robust quality wines to delicate Kabinett wines, and fruity Spätlesen. Each wine showcases the unique character of the terroir, with flavors ranging from rich berry notes to hints of exotic fruits. The wines are marked by their slate influence, offering a fine and mineral quality that resembles liquid slate in the glass. The Bopparder Hamm Feuerlay vineyard is particularly renowned for producing their most powerful Rieslings. The steep slopes of the Bopparder Hamm Fässerlay vineyard, with its higher clay content, present challenges, but the exceptional quality of the grapes grown in this unique microclimate makes every effort worthwhile.
