Syrah, or Shiraz, is a vine grape with a dark skin. Syrah wine has full body and a high level of roughness. Over the years, it has become the most planted grape variety on Australian vineyards. The taste profile depends on the climate where the grape grows: dark berries (such as blackberries and plum) and spices (such as mint, anise and licorice). The acidity and roughness of Syrah gives it good ageing potential.
Where is Syrah from?
Syrah has a long history in the Rhône region in the southeastern France. Today it is one of the most widely planted varieties in the New World, particularly, in the wine-producing regions of Australia where it is commonly known as Shiraz. Also Syrah can be easily found in such countries as Chile, Argentina, South Africa, and New Zealand.
Interesting story about Syrah
The name of this grape historically refers to a completely different wine produced in Shiraz - the capital of the ancient Persian Empire (today - Iran). Legend says that the people of Fokaia (from present-day Turkey) brought the grape with them to the area around Marseilles. If the legend is true, it must have reached the Rhone and almost disappeared in Marseilles.
Syrah grape characteristics
Syrah thrives best in rocky soils with, preferably, granite or clay. The color and taste of the grape varies depending on where it is grown. In cooler climates, like in the Rhône region in eastern France, Syrah has high level of tannins that gives a roughness and flavors such as blackberries, tobacco and pepper. Wines that come from the warmer climate like in Australia are milder with rich fruity flavors, except from Tasmania, where you can try cooler climate Syrah, more similar to the style found in the old world. In cooler climates, like in the Rhône region in eastern France, Syrah has a high level of tannins that gives a roughness and flavors such as blackberries, tobacco and pepper.
Syrah Wines
Syrah has proven its success as one of the most popular grapes in the world and now it is known for its ability to be blended with other grapes such as Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre. Classic Syrah wines are produced under such appellations as Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas and Châteauneuf-de-Pape and, of course, in Australia.
What to pair with Syrah?
The wine pairs well with dark meat and exotic spices thanks to Syrah's full body. Try it with tasty gyros, sausages or shawarma.
