Discover the charms of Serra da Arrábida and surrounding coastal gems
The Serra da Arrábida, which is part of the Arrábida Natural Park, consists of a rugged and steep relief located on the north bank of the Sado river estuary, in the municipality of Setúbal, with the highest point at 501 meters of altitude and peculiar characteristics of climate and flora. With its Mediterranean climate, it has a flora rich in Mediterranean species, such as holm oak, cork oak and oak.
The Arrábida Natural Park, founded in 1976, with an area of approximately 10,800 hectares, and the beaches protected by the mountains, with calm and transparent waters, are popular with the inhabitants of Setúbal and Lisbon. Portinho da Arrábida, a natural harbor sheltered by the mountains, is one of the most sought after in the region. There is also Galapinhos, elected in 2017 as the best beach in Europe by the European Best Destinations portal.
Sesimbra clearly has the charm of a land of sea people. A walk through the narrow and steep streets allows us to observe this through the marine motifs that decorate the houses, the presence of hammocks and other perch arts, don't deny that we are right in the center of a fisherman's land.
The wide range of restaurants also allows us to taste the best of the reserve's gastronomy. You are sure to have fresh fish and seafood on the menu directly from the fish market.
Then there's a visit to the JMF wine museum, built in the 19th century and which was the residence of the Soares Franco family until 1974, ending with a wine tasting.
On your way back to Lisbon, you'll be dazzled by the landscape of the Serra da Arrábida. The visit lasts about an hour and a half.
