The Russian River Valley wine region has a rich history and heritage that dates back to the 1800s. Most of its wineries are located on the valley floor, making it ideal for growing grapes and making wine. The region is known for its cool climate heavily affected by fog generated by the proximity to the Pacific Ocean which develops a rich flavor in Pinot Noir. Russian River Valley covers nearly 389 km2 including the cities of Cazadero, Duncans Mills, Forestville, Guerneville, Jenner by the sea, Monte Rio, and Rio Nildo in the Northern part of Sonoma County, California.

Where is the Russian River Valley wine region?

Russian River Valley wine appellation was recognized as an American Viticultural Area in 1983 which was later enlarged in 2005. The wine region stretches over 96000. In the south, the region is bordered by Sebastopol and Santa Rosa and the northern communities are Healdsburg and Forestville. The geographical area of "The Russian River Valley" is much bigger than its wine appellation. So, it is essential to distinguish between them. The region starts from the town of Healdsburg to the Santa Rosa Plains and Sebastopol to the south, and Monte Rio, Guerneville, and Occidental to the west. 

History of the Russian River Valley wine region

Winemaking in the Russian River Valley has been going on since the 19th century, but it has only been since the dawn of the 20th century that wines were produced commercially. At first, immigrants from Mediterranean countries began settling in the region for its beautiful landscape and fertile soil, then they started planting and cultivating vines for personal consumption. 

The end of the 19th century was the glory days of the Russian River Valley. The region flourished with more than 250 wine growers cultivating about 6,000 acres producing more than a million gallons of wine which is a third of the county’s total wine production. At the time of prohibition, some families continued making wine illegally while others converted their factories to various other purposes. Only after 1970, did the region begin to focus on quality wine production using their grapes. And in 1973, Foppiano vineyard became the first to bottle its wine under the Russian river valley label.

Nestled within the broader expanse of Sonoma County in California, the Russian River Valley stands as a top-tier wine region in the United States. Known for its unique microclimate, which is characterized by cool temperatures and frequent fogs, the valley provides an ideal environment for cultivating grape varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Located less than 16 km East of the Pacific ocean, the region is heavily influenced by cool fog creating huge variation between a high air temperature and low temperature within the same day. 

Russian River Valley has a variety of soil starting from clay to sandstone of loam known as “Goldridge soil”, which was millions of years ago due to volcanic ash deposited with the eruption of volcanic vents. Most of the best chardonnay and pinot noir in the region are produced in these gold ridge soils. The region also consists of Sebastopol soils near the town of Sebastopol that are clay based. 

Popular grape varieties from the Russian River Valley wine region

Russian River Valley is best known for its rich Pinot Noir produced in this cool climate. Pinot Noir accounts for 29 percent of the region's production while Chardonnay accounts for 42%. Although the region is dominated by the majority of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, several other varieties like Syrah and Zinfandel are grown in the hillside area. Some other grapes include Sauvignon blanc, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot.

Impression of the Pinot Noirs starts with notes of wild strawberry, black cherry, smoke, and earth, while the Chardonnays are fragrant with green apple, nectarine, and Meyer lemon. 

Food to pair with Russian River Valley wine 

Barbecue

Portobello mushrooms

Portobello mushroom is the same as white button mushroom, just a different age. These mushrooms are characterized as brown and large compared to younger white mushrooms. 

Portobello mushrooms are first brushed on both sides with marinade, oil, and seasoning and grilled cap side down until slight charring. The dish is often topped up with lemon juice, cheese, or vinaigrette. These portobello mushrooms have meaty characteristics which go very well with medium to full-bodied wines.

Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve

Situated just 3 miles north of the town of Guerneville, the Armstrong redwoods state natural reserves preserve the spectacular primeval redwood forest. The reserve is spread across 805 acres with redwood trees reminding the testament of the natural world. These primeval coastal redwood trees are the tallest living thing on our planet they can grow to a diameter of 12-16 feet and live more than 500 years, some more than 2000 years. The reserve offers a self-guided tour and picnic facilities, where you can cool off beneath these legendary trees to ever grow on this planet.
