History of the Russian River Valley wine region

Winemaking in the Russian River Valley has been going on since the 19th century, but it has only been since the dawn of the 20th century that wines were produced commercially. At first, immigrants from Mediterranean countries began settling in the region for its beautiful landscape and fertile soil, then they started planting and cultivating vines for personal consumption.

The end of the 19th century was the glory days of the Russian River Valley. The region flourished with more than 250 wine growers cultivating about 6,000 acres producing more than a million gallons of wine which is a third of the county’s total wine production. At the time of prohibition, some families continued making wine illegally while others converted their factories to various other purposes. Only after 1970, did the region begin to focus on quality wine production using their grapes. And in 1973, Foppiano vineyard became the first to bottle its wine under the Russian river valley label.

The terroir and geography of the Russian River Valley wine region

Nestled within the broader expanse of Sonoma County in California, the Russian River Valley stands as a top-tier wine region in the United States. Known for its unique microclimate, which is characterized by cool temperatures and frequent fogs, the valley provides an ideal environment for cultivating grape varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. These conditions lead to slow ripening of the grapes, allowing for a greater development of flavor and aroma, hence earning the Russian River Valley a stellar reputation for producing highly esteemed wines. When exploring California's wine country, a trip to the Russian River Valley presents a truly delightful and enriching oenophilic experience.

Just miles from the nearby Pacific Ocean, the Russian River Valley is filled with vineyards, rolling hills, redwood groves, apple orchards, and a flowing river. Located less than 16 km East of the Pacific ocean, the region is heavily influenced by cool fog creating huge variation between a high air temperature and low temperature within the same day.

Russian River Valley has a variety of soil starting from clay to sandstone of loam known as “Goldridge soil”, which was millions of years ago due to volcanic ash deposited with the eruption of volcanic vents. Most of the best chardonnay and pinot noir in the region are produced in these gold ridge soils. The region also consists of Sebastopol soils near the town of Sebastopol that are clay based.

Food to pair with Russian River Valley wine

Barbecue

Barbecue is one of the most popular ways of enjoying meat, fish, or vegetables in the United States. The cooking method is usually enjoyed outdoors in a social gathering, at which meats or fish along with vegetables are roasted over a wood or a charcoal fire with the lid closed.

There are tons of variations of marinade and sauces used in Barbecuing that are mostly based on the region. Barbecue has been a part of American culture and is popular throughout the world. Often served along with the sauce, salad, sweet potato, and beans, barbecue tastes great and is easy to make. Mostly favored meat is pork and beef. Other barbecued items include lamb, chicken, sausages, and sometimes seafood as well.

Pinot noir perfectly pairs with barbecued red meat and sausages that are smoked with the sweet and spicy marinade.

Pepperoni pizzas

Pizza made its way around the world starting in Italy, with lots of variations in the toppings and cooking method. Pizza is round flat dough with tomato sauce with toppings like cheese, meat, olive oil, herbs, sausages, and a whole lot of wishes. This dish is usually baked in high-temperature ovens, originally baked in firewood ovens. Pizza is highly fragrant due to the use of herbs like basil and oregano.

The earthiness of the Pinot Noir enhances the flavor of herbs topped in pizza. The medium-bodied and highly acidic Pinot Noir complements the acidic sauce on the pizza and the pepperoni.

Portobello mushrooms

Portobello mushroom is the same as white button mushroom, just a different age. These mushrooms are characterized as brown and large compared to younger white mushrooms.

Portobello mushrooms are first brushed on both sides with marinade, oil, and seasoning and grilled cap side down until slight charring. The dish is often topped up with lemon juice, cheese, or vinaigrette. These portobello mushrooms have meaty characteristics which go very well with medium to full-bodied wines.
