Annual

Weinmarkt der Ahr (Whitsun Wine Market)

Ahr Germany 22–25 May 2026 (Whitsun weekend)

Weinmarkt der Ahr (Whitsun Wine Market) is one of the wine festivals that anchors the Ahr calendar, drawing both local visitors and international wine travellers each year. It is held at Ahrweiler Market Square in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, in the heart of one of Germany's most distinctive wine areas. It is an annual event with an established local audience and a consistent place in the regional calendar.

Wines, sparkling wines and brandies from Ahr wineries and cooperatives. Music and entertainment. Wine festivals across Europe typically combine producer tastings with food pairings, live music, and a strong sense of place. Visitors can expect access to wines from a range of producers in the appellation, alongside food stalls offering regional specialities, masterclasses or vineyard walks for those who want to learn more, and an opportunity to buy directly from producers at cellar prices. Many events run across multiple days or weekends, allowing visitors to sample different parts of the programme according to interest, and combine well with the area's wider tourism offer. The event is organised by Ahrtal tourism / local winemakers, which sets the tone and direction of the programme each year.

The Ahr is Germany's northernmost wine region of significant size and one of the country's most distinctive — roughly two-thirds of plantings here are red, primarily Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Frühburgunder, an unusually red-focused identity for a German wine region. The Ahr valley follows the small Ahr river west from its confluence with the Rhine at Sinzig, with steep slate-and-greywacke slopes that retain heat. The region was devastated by floods in July 2021 but has been rebuilding with significant national support. Notable producers include Meyer-Näkel, Jean Stodden, Kreuzberg and the cooperative Mayschoß.

The 2026 edition is scheduled for 22-25 May 2026 (Whitsun weekend). Cost details are best confirmed directly with the organiser ahead of travel. Full programme, ticketing and updated information are published on the official site at ahrtal.com. Visitors are advised to check directly with the organiser for the latest schedule, as festival programmes are sometimes updated close to the event date.

The Ahr is reached most easily from Cologne or Bonn (around 45 minutes by car). Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler and Dernau are the main wine-tourism towns, with the spectacular Rotweinwanderweg (Red Wine Hiking Trail) following the river through the heart of the Spätburgunder vineyards. The villages have rebuilt strongly since the July 2021 flood. Local cuisine pairs the wines with the area's distinctive Rhenish specialities: Sauerbraten with raisin sauce, Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), Himmel un Ääd, Halver Hahn (rye bread with cheese), and Pinot Noir-friendly preparations of game from the Eifel forests inland.
