Tokaj Wine and Music Festival

Tokaj Hungary Late May 2026

Tokaj Wine and Music Festival is one of the wine festivals that anchors the Tokaj calendar, drawing both local visitors and international wine travellers each year. It is held at Tokaj town centre in Tokaj, in the heart of one of Hungary's most distinctive wine areas. It is an annual event with an established local audience and a consistent place in the regional calendar.

The festival opens the spring season in Tokaj with cellar visits across the historic town, tastings of new-release dry Furmint and Hárslevelű, late-harvest and Aszú wines, traditional music programmes in the town square, and guided walks through the Tokaj vineyards. Producers including Royal Tokaji, Disznókő, Oremus, Szepsy and Patricius all participate, with cellar doors open across the weekend. Harvest and grape festivals — fiestas de la vendimia, festas das vindimas, weinlesefeste — are some of the longest-running celebrations in their regions, with many running uninterrupted for a century or more. Programmes typically combine grape-stomping demonstrations, traditional music, parades of allegorical floats, food stalls offering regional specialities, and tastings of the area's wines. The events have strong local character and are often as much community celebrations as wine programmes, with town councils, parish committees and local producer associations sharing the organisational load. Many festivals incorporate religious elements — blessings of the harvest, processions to the parish church — that connect the wine calendar to the liturgical year. The event is organised by Tokaj Renaissance Association, which sets the tone and direction of the programme each year.

Tokaj in northeastern Hungary is one of the world's oldest classified wine regions — formally demarcated by royal decree in 1737 — and a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape since 2002. The region is best known for Tokaji Aszú, the legendary sweet wine made from botrytis-affected (noble rot) Furmint, Hárslevelű and Sárga Muskotály grapes. The 'Wine of Kings, King of Wines' famously praised by Louis XIV is now produced alongside increasingly serious dry Furmint and Hárslevelű, single-vineyard bottlings, and a renewed sparkling-wine programme. Producers like Royal Tokaji, Disznókő, Oremus, Szepsy and the Tokaj-Oremus group set the international quality reference for the region.

The 2026 edition is scheduled for Late May 2026. Cost details: Various ticket levels. Full programme, ticketing and updated information are published on the official site at https://tokajrenaissance.com/. Visitors are advised to check directly with the organiser for the latest schedule, as festival programmes are sometimes updated close to the event date.

Tokaj is reached most easily from Budapest (2 hours by car or 3 hours by train via the Miskolc line), with Tokaj town and Mád as the main wine-tourism bases. The Bodrog and Tisza rivers run through the region, with scenic boat tours available in season. Hungarian cuisine pairs the wines with libamáj (foie gras, Tokaj's classic match for Aszú), pörkölt (paprika stew), túrós csusza (curd-cheese pasta) and the area's farmhouse cheeses and walnut specialities. The region's medieval cellar networks under Tokaj, Mád and Tarcal are themselves a major attraction.
