Festa da Vindima do Douro (Douro Harvest Festival) is one of the wine festivals that anchors the Porto & Douro calendar, drawing both local visitors and international wine travellers each year. It is held at Peso da Régua in Vila Real, in the heart of one of Portugal's most distinctive wine areas. It has been running since 1947, with a long unbroken local tradition behind it.
The Douro Harvest Festival in Peso da Régua is the central public celebration of the Port wine harvest each September. The programme includes the traditional pisa da uva (grape-stomping in granite lagares), Port wine tastings from major Douro houses (Symington, Taylor's, Sandeman, Croft, Sogrape, Niepoort), traditional rabelo boat races on the Douro river, masterclasses on the Douro DOC and Port classifications, parades through Régua's old town, classical music concerts in the Casa do Douro, and a regional gastronomy market featuring posta mirandesa beef, alheira sausage and the area's olive oils. The festival doubles as the official launch of the year's harvest in the Cima Corgo zone. Harvest and grape festivals — fiestas de la vendimia, festas das vindimas, weinlesefeste — are some of the longest-running celebrations in their regions, with many running uninterrupted for a century or more. Programmes typically combine grape-stomping demonstrations, traditional music, parades of allegorical floats, food stalls offering regional specialities, and tastings of the area's wines. The events have strong local character and are often as much community celebrations as wine programmes, with town councils, parish committees and local producer associations sharing the organisational load. Many festivals incorporate religious elements — blessings of the harvest, processions to the parish church — that connect the wine calendar to the liturgical year. The event is organised by Município de Peso da Régua and Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e do Porto, which sets the tone and direction of the programme each year.
The Douro Valley in northern Portugal is the country's most internationally-known wine region and a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. The valley produces both fortified Port wine — aged in the lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia opposite Porto — and unfortified Douro DOC table wines from indigenous varieties including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Tinto Cao and Tinta Barroca for reds, with Viosinho, Rabigato, Gouveio and Códega for whites.
