Bosnia-Herzegovina Wine Country
Bosnia-Herzegovina is one of the six countries that was established when the Former Yugoslavia fell. Many different peoples left their influences on Bosnia’s culture, that today is a mix of Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and Yugoslavian traditions. As it happened in several neighboring Balkan countries, the wine production of the Bosnia-Herzegovina wine country stopped because of the wars of the 1990s. In more recent years of peace, the wine industry registered rapid growth.
Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Wine Regions
The Herzegovina wine region is the most famous and productive of Bosnia, together with the area near the Adriatic Sea. In the Herzegovina wine region, the most famous wine-producing area in Mostar, the former Islamic center of Herzegovina. Northern Bosnia is the second most important wine region in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Both in the Herzegovina wine region and in the Northern Bosnia wine region, there are several wineries open for tastings and cellar tours. Wines from the Bosnia-Herzegovina Wine Country
The two dominant grape varieties among the Bosnia wine regions are Žilavka (white) and Blatina (red). Both these varieties are indigenous. Žilavka is acid and potentially alcoholic light-colored white wine. The grapes cultivated between Mostar and the Adriatic Coast are used to make the highest-quality Bosnian wine. Blatina is a dark red grape that results in a dry ruby red wine. Blatina wine features aftertastes of coffee and spices, and even chocolate if it ages for a long period.
