Roads to Wine – Algarve is one of the wine festivals that anchors the Algarve calendar, drawing both local visitors and international wine travellers each year. It is held at Various wineries in Lagoa and Silves areas, in the heart of one of Portugal's most distinctive wine areas. Four DOCs cover the region: Lagos, Lagoa, Portimão and Tavira. Native red grapes include Negra Mole, Castelão and Trincadeira, with Touriga Nacional and Aragonez also planted, and whites mainly from Síria, Arinto and Malvasia Fina. The region has seen significant quality investment over the past two decades, with new boutique wineries combining traditional Algarvian wine culture with modern winemaking and a strong wine-tourism programme aimed at the Algarve's holiday visitors.

The Algarve is reached via Faro airport (FAO), with Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira, Tavira and Vilamoura as the main coastal bases. The wine areas inland from these resorts can be reached easily by car. Algarvian cuisine pairs the wines with cataplana (a copper-pan fish-and-shellfish stew), ameijoas à algarvia, frango piri-piri, the area's almond and fig sweets (including the marzipan-figured Algarvian doces), grilled sardines along the coast, and the cuisine of the Serra do Caldeirão and Monchique mountains inland.
