Essência do Vinho Porto

Porto & Douro Portugal February 26 - March 1, 2026

Essência do Vinho Porto is one of the wine festivals that anchors the Porto & Douro calendar, drawing both local visitors and international wine travellers each year. It is held at Palácio da Bolsa in Porto, in the heart of one of Portugal's most distinctive wine areas. The festival has been running since 2003 and reaches its 23th edition in 2026, giving it one of the longer track records among wine events of its kind.

Essência do Vinho is Portugal's largest and most internationally-visible consumer wine event, held each February-March in Porto's monumental 19th-century Palácio da Bolsa stock exchange. Around 400 producers from across Portugal pour their wines over four days — Douro and Port lodges form the core, with strong representation from Vinho Verde, Dão, Alentejo, Bairrada, Lisbon, Setubal and Madeira. The programme includes themed master tastings led by international critics, vertical retrospectives of historic Port wines, food-pairing tastings showcasing Porto's gastronomic scene, and dedicated programmes for Vintage Port, Madeira and Portuguese still wines aged 10+ years. Wine festivals across Europe typically combine producer tastings with food pairings, live music, and a strong sense of place. Visitors can expect access to wines from a range of producers in the appellation, alongside food stalls offering regional specialities, masterclasses or vineyard walks for those who want to learn more, and an opportunity to buy directly from producers at cellar prices. Many events run across multiple days or weekends, allowing visitors to sample different parts of the programme according to interest, and combine well with the area's wider tourism offer. The event is organised by Essência do Vinho / Revista Vinho Magazine, which sets the tone and direction of the programme each year.

The Douro Valley in northern Portugal is the country's most internationally-known wine region and a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. The valley produces both fortified Port wine — aged in the lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia opposite Porto — and unfortified Douro DOC table wines from indigenous varieties including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Tinto Cao and Tinta Barroca for reds, with Viosinho, Rabigato, Gouveio and Códega for whites. The terraced vineyards along the Douro River have been cultivated since at least Roman times, and the Douro DOC was demarcated in 1756, making it one of the world's oldest formal wine appellations.

The 2026 edition is scheduled for February 26 - March 1, 2026. Festival access is ticketed: Day pass tickets from approx €40-60. Full programme, ticketing and updated information are published on the official site at https://essenciadovinho.com. Visitors are advised to check directly with the organiser for the latest schedule, as festival programmes are sometimes updated close to the event date.

The Douro Valley is reached most easily via Porto (Sá Carneiro airport), with the historic Douro railway line from Porto to Pocinho running along the southern bank of the river — one of Europe's most scenic train journeys. Peso da Régua and Pinhão are the main wine-tourism towns. River cruises operate along the Douro from Porto into the Cima Corgo zone. Northern Portuguese cuisine pairs the wines with francesinha sandwich (Porto specialty), tripas à moda do Porto, posta mirandesa beef, vinho-marinated octopus, and the area's smoked sausages including alheira and farinheira.
