Winemaking from Generation to Generation

Located in the vibrant heart of Valpolicella, one of Italy’s most renowned regions for producing exceptional red wines, Azienda Agricola Norma Massaro is rich in experience, passed down from generation to generation. Around the mid-1900s, the business was founded by the grandfather, who worked the land as a sharecropper. Over the years, a deep passion for the land and a love for wine were passed on to his son, Valentino, who decided to purchase the vineyards his father had cultivated and carry on the family tradition.

This family heritage continued to grow, expanding the business to its present scale. The real turning point came in 2015 when the family's children, driven by the passion inherited from their grandfather and father, decided to transition from selling their grapes to producing their own wines. The company name is a heartfelt dedication from the children to their mother, Norma.

The estate's vineyards, thanks to their magnificent geographical position, are bathed in sunlight from dawn to dusk, enjoying an incredibly fortunate and highly envied location. This unique exposure allows the grapes—typical varieties of the region, such as Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara—to develop their full potential, resulting in wines of undeniable excellence and quality.

The winery’s philosophy is centered around engaging and involving wine lovers in a unique journey, where the starting point is the elegant and refined label, but the true protagonist is, of course, the wine itself. The label is the result of a long and meticulous study aimed at giving the bottle—the "guardian" of the wine—a distinctive and instantly recognizable image.

Wines

Each year, three wines are produced from our cellars:

  • Valpolicella Classico DOC – Infused with flavors and aromas that reflect the rich tradition and history of the Negrar region.
  • Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore DOC – Stands out for its impressive structure and a deep, intense aromatic bouquet.
  • Amarone DOCG – The symbol of the estate’s excellence, offering an intense and extraordinary flavor that encapsulates the complexity, refinement, and smooth elegance of this prestigious wine.

Hard work, innovation, and passion define our craft, ensuring that every bottle we produce embodies the rich legacy of our family’s winemaking tradition.

On Tuesday 21 May 2024, I was in Verona in the municipality of Negrar to visit the Massaro company. The appointment for the visit was agreed with the owner Nicola Massaro, through the invitation from our suppliers. For the occasion he organized a tasting of their products and carried out a visit to their vineyards. The experience in its entirety proved to be engaging thanks to the hospitality of Nicola, who accompanied me with his knowledge through all the phases of production with explanations during tasting that they best represent the quality and passion with which they have carried out their great activity for years

Magnificent family-run winery where you will be welcomed by Nicola, who will be able to introduce you to the interesting world of wine production, starting from explaining the importance of caring for the plant to pampering your palate with a wine (or rather three 😜) of excellent quality. Highly recommended!
