Experience the Unique Terroir and Quality Wines of Leistadt, Germany
Essence
Founded in 1955, Weingut Hanewald-Schwerdt is a family-owned winery located in Leistadt, a charming village nestled in the hills north of Bad Dürkheim, Palatinate. The Hanewald and Schwerdt families manage 28 hectares of vineyards, stretching from Weisenheim am Berg in the north to Ruppertsberg in the south. Their primary focus is on crafting dry wines, particularly Riesling and Pinot Noir, that reflect the character of their vintage and vineyard. The estate's success is closely tied to the unique limestone reef that enriches their wines.
Terroir
Most of the Pinot Noir vines thrive on the limestone slopes surrounding Leistadt, while the Riesling portfolio showcases two distinct terroirs of the Pfalz region. The cooler, mineral-driven Riesling from Leistadt contrasts with the warmer, juicier, and spicier style found in the renowned Riesling towns of Deidesheim and Ruppertsberg, located just 15 km south of Leistadt.
The winery offers three quality levels, classified similarly to Burgundy: Gutsweine (regional wines), Ortsweine (village wines), and Lagenweine (single vineyard wines). This classification allows wine lovers to appreciate the diverse expressions of the Pfalz terroir.
