Essence

Founded in 1955, Weingut Hanewald-Schwerdt is a family-owned winery located in Leistadt, a charming village nestled in the hills north of Bad Dürkheim, Palatinate. The Hanewald and Schwerdt families manage 28 hectares of vineyards, stretching from Weisenheim am Berg in the north to Ruppertsberg in the south. Their primary focus is on crafting dry wines, particularly Riesling and Pinot Noir, that reflect the character of their vintage and vineyard. The estate's success is closely tied to the unique limestone reef that enriches their wines.

Terroir

Most of the Pinot Noir vines thrive on the limestone slopes surrounding Leistadt, while the Riesling portfolio showcases two distinct terroirs of the Pfalz region. The cooler, mineral-driven Riesling from Leistadt contrasts with the warmer, juicier, and spicier style found in the renowned Riesling towns of Deidesheim and Ruppertsberg, located just 15 km south of Leistadt.

The winery offers three quality levels, classified similarly to Burgundy: Gutsweine (regional wines), Ortsweine (village wines), and Lagenweine (single vineyard wines). This classification allows wine lovers to appreciate the diverse expressions of the Pfalz terroir.

Such a pleasant tour with great hospitality and a lot of insights

Definitely a five star wholesome experience in the wine yard and winery. Simon was so kind to offer us a drive when there was problem of the public transportation which made us almost impossible to get to the winery. Also Simon was so patient in answering our questions and explaining everything about their wine. We also found a few types of wine super interesting and unique that we finally got bottles after the tour. We not only got nice Riesling but also great red wine cuvée and beerenauslese here. The Zweihänder and the beerenauslese are our fav. It’s so eye opening to know that the winery has such great varieties of grapes. I definitely would love to come back again in the future and would recommend more people to try it.
