Medieval charm and high-end wine tasting: a cultural journey from Milan to Bergamo

Medieval town + high-end wine tasting!

This tour is though to be a deep dive into culture: history, art, and of course, wine.

You will discover the ancient beauty of Bergamo and its deep culture made of local traditions, legends, and medieval lords. This is a unique town just few km away from Milan. It is divided in two: Bergamo high town, which is the oldest, and Bergamo low town, which is the newest. The high town is a Venetian medieval township surrounded by UNESCO heritage walls. This historic comune is made by cobbled narrow streets, noble palazzos and artistic churches. You will enjoy its relaxed atmosphere created by tiny shops and cafés, picturesque restaurant, lovely alleys, and even more. The high town is on the top of a hill, so it offers a stunning view on the mountains and planes around it.

You will certainly deep dive into Italian wine culture. You’ll taste local wines and explore the wine region under the guidance of an Italian sommelier. Ready to discover local viticulture and winemaking? Bergamo has its unique wine culture and its own grape variety: Moscato di Scanzo. This grape variety is only grown locally to produce a precious, red and sweet wine. This is a traditional passito made on Bergamo’s pre-Alpine hills, along with other local wines. This area hosts a constellation of small wineries. Their wines are rich because of the uniqueness of the land. This terroir is blessed by the so-called sass de luna “lunar rocks”, peculiar clay and limestone rocks that give body and finesse to the wines. You will visit a local boutique winery for your wine tasting.

Details:

The tour starts at 9.30. The meeting point is Piazzale Piola on the corner of Via Pacini. Piola is a famous square in the university district of Milan, easily reachable by public transport (eg. Metro line 2, stop Piola). Please arrive 10 min in advance.

You will start immediately your journey to Bergamo High Town by car. It will take about 45 minutes. Once in Bergamo you will visit all the High Town. The guide will take you to the main spots including the city gates, the Duomo square, the famous Colleoni chapel... he will reveal you step by step the fascinating history and culture of this ancient town. You will also have time to relax, to visit the shops, to take some pictures and to have a coffee etc. if you wish. Then you will finally reach the panoramic viewpoint. It’s a key spot because you will see the Venetian Walls and all the surroundings in background, including the very Milan’s skyline if the day is clear enough.

The tour continues toward the local wine region. You’ll be driven to the main corners of the terroir and guided to pick up its key features. Ippolita Lucchetti’s is the winery selected for this tour: it’s family own winery, an iconic local boutique winegrower and winemaker. Ippolita Lucchetti’s is in the middle of the typical gentle vineyard terraces of the area. You will be lead through its cellar where you’ll discover several winemaking features as barriques, tanks, sparkling wine and passito production items. This wine tasting is designed to be both professional and fun. It features high end wines too. You’ll start tasting the winery’s brut sparkling wine traditional method, followed by the 2018 Valcalepio rosso riserva (red and reserve wine). Finally you’ll taste the precious Moscato di Scanzo passito. All of this will be paired by local cheese and cured meat (please inform me in advance if you follow a specific diet).

You’ll be back to Milan at the same meeting point in Piazzale Piola at about 13.00.
