Discover Oltrepò Pavese: a full-day wine and culinary journey from Milan

This tour is designed to make you taste and explore delicious wine and food in a stunning scenery.

We are heading to Oltrepò Pavese, an historic borderland made of vineyards, medieval castles, and wildlife. Its breathtaking views, its lovely rolling hills and ancient woods are still untouched by overtourism. This place keeps its backcountry charm. Oltrepò can claim a pre-Roman viticulture, and wine is made here ever since. This is a farmland so you can taste fresh farm produce; the Oltrepò food and wine traditions are passed down in families from generation to generation since distant past.

1)You’ll visit:

 - A stunning panoramic viewpoint with a “big bench”, an actual huge bench on the top of a hill. It takes an easy hike of 10 minutes to get there.

-the vineyards grown for making the wines that you are going to taste.

-The boutique winery “Il Verone”, including the cellars.

2)Then, in the winery’s own  panoramic terrace…You will taste:

>>Wine:

-One glass of Cortese (white wine)

-One glass of Rielsing Italico (white wine)

-One glass of Barbera (red wine)

-One glass of Pinot Noir (red wine)

>>Pairing with the following menu:

-              Local farmhouse cured meat: (salami – pancetta – cooked salami– coppa )

-              Vinegar vegetables (Lombard receipe)

-              Malfatti (local gnocchi made of herbs cooked with butter and sage)

-              Homemade quiches

-              Chease made by the local cheesemaker Marco Bernini nicknamed “the alchemist”, and cheese from the farm Oranami

-             Volpedo Breadsticks

Details:

The tour starts at 9.30. The meeting point is Piazzale Gabrio Piola in Milan, on the corner of Via Pacini . Piola is a famous square in the university district of Milan. It is easily reachable by public transport (eg. Metro line 2, stop Piola). Please arrive 10 min in advance.

You will start immediately your journey to Oltrepò Pavese by car. It will take about 1 hour and 10 min. First stop: the viewpoint “big bench”. It takes 10 minutes by feet from the car park. This is a short and easy hike in the nature, I just recommend of wearing comfortable shoes. You will have a breathtaking panoramic view on the hills, grasslands and medieval villages from this very big bench on hilltop. Then the tour continues to the Verone vineyards. The Verone vines are planted on slopes surrounded by mountains and valleys; here the guide will introduce you to local viticulture practices and wine culture. You will eventually be driven to the Verone winery itself: this is a boutique winery located in what used to be a tiny farmer’s village in Medieval time. You will discover the art of winemaking through both the old and the new wine cellar. Both wine and food tasting begins at about 12.30. The selected location is the Verone terrace where you will have an incredible view on all the Po Valley that lays below and stretches to the Alps. These tastings will be carried out to make you appreciate the wines and food the most. It is thought to be both a real winetasting and an actual agritourism lunch. You will have time to relax and enjoy before leaving.

You will be back to Milan (right in Piola square) at around 2.00-2.30 pm.
