Sant'Agnese in Agone, located in Piazza Navona in Rome, is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. Designed by several notable architects, including Girolamo Rainaldi, Carlo Rainaldi, and Francesco Borromini, the church showcases the dramatic and ornate style of the period. Here are its main architectural features: Façade: The concave façade, designed by Borromini, curves elegantly inward, creating a dynamic interaction with the surrounding piazza. It is adorned with statues and decorative elements that emphasize the verticality of the design. Cupola: The central dome, a characteristic of Baroque architecture, dominates the structure and is crowned by a lantern. It allows natural light to flood the interior, creating a heavenly ambiance. Camenoles: Flanking the dome are two symmetrical bell towers, adding balance and grandeur to the overall composition. Interior: The interior is rich in marble, stucco, and gilded decorations. The ornate chapels and altars are adorned with sculptures and paintings by renowned artists. Dome Frescoes: The interior of the dome is decorated with stunning frescoes depicting scenes of divine glory, enhancing the spiritual experience.

Sant'Agnese in Agone is one of Rome’s most beautiful Baroque churches, located right in the heart of Piazza Navona. With its elegant façade, rich history, and breathtaking interior, it’s a hidden gem that offers a peaceful escape from the lively square outside. The church is situated right in Piazza Navona, next to Bernini’s famous Fountain of the Four Rivers. We had the pleasure of staying in hotel right in front of it and we couldn’t be more delighted of the view.

Not only a beautiful church with great history, but it hosts classical, though in our case, baroque music concerts to be precise. Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Google Classictic to learn more. It was a lovely and unforgettable experience.

The Cripta di Sant’Agnese in Agone has finally reopened after 7 years of restoration, and it’s absolutely worth a visit. The entrance is just €5, accessible from inside the church on Piazza Navona. The site is truly impressive, you’ll not only see the crypt itself but also the place where the miracle of Saint Agnes took place. Additionally, you can explore the foundations of the Stadium of Domitian, which is only 15 years younger than the Colosseum, built around 85 AD during Domitian’s reign. The atmosphere is both awe-inspiring and deeply spiritual, making it a must-visit for history and art lovers alike.
