Historical Château Balestard la Tonnelle

Château Balestard la Tonnelle is a property located on the heights of Saint-Emilion. The 15th-century watchtower and the 21st-century cellars show the secular durability of this estate. Passionate about architecture, the current owners have kept the identity of the property while modernizing it, thus allowing it to maintain its status as a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé.

Wine with a Distinct Style

Fine and full-bodied, Château Balestard La Tonnelle is a rich, intense and structured wine. Final quality is exquisite. Its reputation is old, when in the XVth century, François Villon wrote about Balestard La Tonnelle in one of his most famous poems, as divine nectar.

A Unique Label in the World

Proud of its unique label in the world the label of the winery is inscribed with a poem by François Villon. This text has been on the label since the 19th century. François Villon praises the merits of Balestard wine, speaking of divine nectar. The originality of this poem lies as much in its form as in its style. In the Middle Ages, it was very rare to express one's feelings. Villon has always been haunted by death, but wine made him forget his neurosis.

My family and I showed up without a reservation and Audrey took care of us! She gave us an excellent tour and explained the process. Vineyards are well kept and location is beautiful. I would definitely recommend doing the tour with Audrey as she has many years of experience and is passionate about wine. She will make sure your tour is worth your time! Tour and tasting is ~€15.

Great visit. Lea was very knowledgeable and a great host. The property is beautiful and the equipment is impressive — very high tech. The wine — St Emilion Grand Cru Classe 2016 was superb.

Very good experience, especially thanks to Audrey who explained everything to us with enthusiasm and professionalism. The facilities are great and the tasting overlooking the vineyards is unbeatable. We felt very comfortable and learned a lot.

Great discovery! An incredible place, a magnificent property and a warm team. Thank you to Léa, our guide, who took us on an excursion for an afternoon. The visit, the rooftop terrace and the tasting are great!! I recommend with your eyes closed.

Superb! At all levels. Simplicity, listening skills, we were accompanied by one of the owners of the Château, who, with infinite kindness, gave us his time and his thoughts. Tastings of course, but not only... History of the family, problems of the winegrowers of the region, new ideas and creativity. A high-class place, an excellently well-stocked shop, a company managed by great and authentic professionals.

My grandmother and I took the Spanish guided tour of the chateau when we were in Saint-Émilion and we both really enjoyed the experience. The explanations were always very clear and our guide was very friendly, open to answering all our questions in a precise manner. The two wines we tasted were really very good, with a personal preference for the Cap de Mourlin 2016 :)

Don't miss the splendid terrace that offers an exceptional view of the vineyards of St Emilion and where you can appreciate the wine produced by the Château which is actually distinguished as coming from three different estates subsequently acquired by the owners and of different quality. The visit in English (it is not available in Italian and strictly to be booked by telephone) is paid (perhaps for the holiday period it seemed a bit aseptic and hasty) as the tasting. Perhaps the month of August is not the best time to grasp the passion of the production of such an important wine.
