Wineries in Rheingau are proud not only for the centuries-old tradition they carry, but also, historically, as the place where late harvest wines originated. Nothing here happened by accident; the family members have inherited the knowledge, culture, and passion for wine, from one generation to the next.
Adding the instrumental role the, world-famous, oenological research and teaching institutes in Geisenheim play in the region you can safely assume that wineries in Rheingau aim only the top! Family-run businesses, devoted to tradition, making great investments to improve the quality of their wines with great respect towards sustainability, organic viticulture, and some of them are practicing biodynamic cultivation!
The bond, the winemakers have with their vineyards is stronger than in many other wine regions worldwide. And as for the future, with Geisenhem University active, the abundance of young talent with fresh ideas seems endless.
The majority, almost 80%, of vineyards here are planted to the Riesling grape, while some wineries in Rheingau cultivate non-traditional grape varieties like Viognier and Orléans. Spätburgunder (the German Pinot Noir) follows from a distance, being at second place with around 12%. Rheingau sparklings and dessert sweet wines complete the chart’s percentage and fulfill any wine lover’s desire.
The morphology and the micro-climate of the region permit the white wines to thrive, having reds behave like supplements, although this does not apply. Except for the delicious sweet wines which are produced by letting Riesling grapes dry on which botrytis noble rot has worked, another type of sweet wine, called Eiswein (ice wine), is obtained by leaving bunches on plants until the weather is cold enough to harvest frozen grapes.
