Experience a historic winery in Catalonia's Cortiella Valley
The History of Mas Del Botó
Mas Del Botó is a historic estate nestled in the picturesque Cortiella Valley, located in Alforja, within the Baix Camp region of Catalonia. Spanning over 40 hectares, this estate features 5 hectares dedicated to vineyards. The Llauradó brothers, who have a rich winemaking heritage, revitalized the winery 30 years ago. The estate's roots trace back to the 12th century, with documented references in a donation letter from Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona, to Ramon de Ganagot. This letter commemorates Ganagot's contributions during the conquest of Siurana. In honor of this legacy, the premium wine produced here is named after him. The valley also holds remnants of ancient mining activities, including silver from Roman and Arab times, as well as lead and iron until the late 1960s. Adjacent to Mas Del Botó is Mas de Mestre, which served as the Camp de Tarragona headquarters during the last Carlist war.
The Origin of "Cal Botó"
The nickname "Cal Botó" refers to several estates and the manor house in Alforja. It originates from a local Justice of the Peace who became embroiled in a conflict between two neighbors. After making a decision that angered one party, the judge narrowly escaped an attack with a dagger, thanks to a medallion he wore as a symbol of his authority. This incident led to the nickname "Button." Today, the name is commonly associated with the winery and its surrounding estates.
