Experience the rich history and exceptional wines at McLaren Vale's historic 1865 chapel site.
A Stunning Winery
Chapel Hill Winery, located in the picturesque McLaren Vale, is set on the historic grounds of the Seaview Chapel and schoolhouse. The iconic 1865 ironstone Chapel remains a central feature of the tasting room, offering a unique backdrop for wine enthusiasts. The vineyard was established in 1972, with the first vintage produced in 1975. Nestled on the edge of the breathtaking Onkaparinga Gorge, the winery boasts shallow rocky soils and panoramic views of McLaren Vale and the Gulf St Vincent.
A Rich Heritage
The winery takes its name from the historic ironstone Chapel, built by Methodist settlers in the McLaren Vale region and officially opened on December 5, 1865. For a century, it served as a place of worship, education, and community gathering for local farming families. A commemorative service marked its closure after 100 years of service in 1965.
In the early 1970s, the Chapel began a new chapter. After years of neglect, the building caught the attention of Adelaide Professor Thomas Nelson. He purchased the Chapel and surrounding land from the Uniting Church, planting the first vines in 1972. With dedication, he transformed the historic structure into a winery, adding thoughtful spaces for wine production and tasting, laying the groundwork for what is now Chapel Hill Winery.
