The Historic Farm of Durbanville

Groot Phesantekraal is a historic farm in the Durbanville wine region where a resourceful family combines respect for their heritage and a passion for progress to produce accessible wines of excellence. The Groot Phesantekraal has a long history which started in 1698. The farm has been passed from family to family until the present owner, the Brink family. The farm has been a successful producer of grains, cattle, and sheep in past but now the Brink family cultivates grapes in 50 ha of this property, which they planted in the 1990s.

Terroir of Durbanville Wine Region

Durbanville wine region is situated in the Eastern Cape and has some of the best vineyards in South Africa. The region is well known for its dry, sandy soils which make it ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Merlot grapes. The unusual characteristics of the soil here are that it produces a wide range of microclimates and extreme temperatures, with a very limited amount of sunshine. This variety of climate makes this area perfect for producing large volumes of wine without overheating or distortion due to large temperature swings, even when vineyards are set close together and grow near each other.

The Unique Features of Groot Phesantekraal Winery

The winery runs on the philosophy of limited production with high quality. They use the native varietals of grapes to produce their wines. They have combined traditional winemaking practices with innovative technology to produce wines organically. Located in the northeast of Durbanville, the vineyards enjoy the cooling effect of the Atlantic. These wines capture the authenticity of the lands of the Durbanville wine region.

Lunch was delicious with style in the exquisite restaurant atmosphere with open glass door views. A variety of special dishes with descent portions and nicely priced. The wine tasting room was the best I ever experienced. It has a sense of class, yet comfortable and welcoming that you can sit and enjoy your wine tasting or a glass or two with friends and pass a lovely weekend time. All wines are of excellent quality especially their Sauvignon Blanc and wooded range. It was a fantastic time well spent to relax in close proximity to metro area. Thank you, definitely will return.

Groot Phesantekraal Wines & Restaurant About 10 minutes from central Durbanville. A little off my own beaten track but a great way to spend a warm sunny Saturday - well, warm enough, I guess.’ Great service - chose a glass of their bubbly and Jen had a carafe of their rosé - rosé on the more sophisticated than most side and very pleasant and generous glass of cap classique. Followed immediately by an excellent bread board with two spreads - whipped butter and a very purple emulsion that tasted absolute incredible - and included blueberries! Bread was a sweetish mosbolletjie-type with a perfect crust. Some smoked olives and pickled cucumber completed the board. No limitations on what you mix and match so we went for venison tartare with a side salad and beef pickled tongue with extra crisped potatoes. The tartare also had big homemade crisps as an accompaniment. Two chocolate cremeaux and an espresso each completed an excellent lunch. R1000 for two including tip. Hot tip: Book during in advance it’s very well known (in the northern parts) and very popular. Very shy chef - difficult to find a name - will keep trying!

Groot Phesantekraal offers a charming and intimate wine tasting experience. While it may not cater to the most adventurous palates, it’s perfect for those looking to explore new wines in a cozy setting. The glass structure is beautiful, with a central bar and inviting tasting nooks that create a warm atmosphere. The tomato and basil flatbread is a must-try, and the cheese board, though fruit-heavy, is picture-worthy. However, there are no coat hooks for rainy days, and one side of the glass structure faces the parking lot, which can be a slight downside. Still, this spot is ideal for catching up with friends or enjoying a relaxing day out. Highly recommend for repeat visits!
