A Serendipitous Legacy of Pinot Noir in Tuscany
The Accidental Birth of a Pinot Noir Legacy
Marchesi Pancrazi is a remarkable winery nestled in the heart of Tuscany, between Prato and Pistoia, on the scenic slopes of Monte Ferrato. This estate spans 5 hectares of Pinot Noir vineyards, complemented by approximately 3,000 olive trees and 45 hectares of lush woodlands. The winery's acclaim stems from a fortunate mistake made in the 1970s when the owners decided to replant their vineyards. Instead of the expected Sangiovese, the nurseryman provided Pinot Noir vines. This oversight was only recognized years later, but it led to a revelation for the current winemaker, Dr. Nicolò D’Afflitto, who saw the potential of the land. Since 1989, the estate has focused exclusively on producing exceptional Pinot Noir, thriving in the unique microclimate of Bagnolo, characterized by significant temperature fluctuations and mineral-rich, humid soil.
The Historic Villa of Bagnolo
The Villa di Bagnolo, constructed between the 16th and 17th centuries, has a rich history tied to the Strozzi family of Florence. This medieval structure has remained in the family, never sold, even after the male line ended in 1863. Following the death of the last Strozzi heir in 1963, the estate passed to Cristina and Vittorio Pancrazi. The villa features a picturesque gravel driveway that gracefully curves through the manicured lawn. Its main facade boasts three stories and seven axes, highlighted by a grand double ramp staircase and a charming dovecote tower. The lower wings include a service area, and nearby stands an oratory dedicated to Saint Lucia, showcasing beautiful 19th-century architecture.
