Quinta da Sequeira, A Traditional Family-Run Winery Since 1899
Quinta da Sequeira Winery is a traditional family-run winery present in Vila Nova de Foz Coa of the wine region of Douro Superior. Along with his wife, Maria Jose Sequeira, Jose Joaquim Costa, set up the winery in 1899. The winery is named after Maria, and currently, Jose’s great-granddaughter, Maria da Graca, owns the winery with her husband, Mario Cardoso. Located in the Douro Superior’s best locations, the conditions are perfect for growing high-quality grapes. Quinta da Sequeira uses organic and sustainable methods in their vineyards to preserve the natural environment and health of their vines for future generations.
Some of the vines at Quinta da Sequeira Winery are over 100 years old, producing a low amount of high-quality grapes.
The Main Aim of the Winery
The main aim of the winery is to produce wines with personality, character, and excellent taste. Their estate has almost 15 hectares of vineyards in which they grow various traditional grape varieties of the Douro. Some of the vines are over 100 years old, they are low yielding, but the grapes they produce are of high quality. The temperature, rainfall, and soil are perfect for the cultivation of vines in the region.
Growing Traditional Grape Varieties of the Douro
The main types of grapes grown in their vineyards are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Malvasia Fina, Viosinho, and Códega do Larinho. The best grapes go into producing their world-class red, white, rosé, dessert, and fortified wines. They maintain a high standard in every step from the vineyards to wine production in the cellars as there is minimal intervention at Quinta da Sequeira. The wines keep their natural taste and aroma throughout the entire winemaking process.
