Established by the Dunleavy family in the late 80s, Te Motu is one of Waiheke’s founding vineyards and remains family run today. Specialising in complex Bordeaux-style reds, the cellar door offers a rare chance to taste and purchase aged vintages, the only experience of its kind on the island.

Overlooking the picturesque Onetangi Valley, Te Motu is also home to The Shed, an award-winning vineyard restaurant known for its relaxed atmosphere and seasonal, locally sourced dishes.

Incredible! Worth the trip to NZ alone! Food was one of, if not the best meal I’ve ever had and paired with the wines just made the whole experience memorable! Thank you!

From the moment we arrived for our 2 PM lunch reservation, our experience felt genuinely special. As two couples in our 50s visiting from Hungary, we were immediately welcomed by the laid-back and inviting vibe of the place. We started off simply, each with a glass of delicious red or rosé, saving our three-wine tasting for later. Every dish we tried was a delight—four creative starters and three mains, all shining with fresh ingredients and thoughtful twists. The food had that fine dining flair in its combinations, yet nothing about it felt overly formal. Instead, the atmosphere was relaxed and warm, making us instantly comfortable. The true highlight, though, was the sense of heart and creativity in every bite and sip, clearly a reflection of the passionate family behind the winery. We were incredibly lucky to have Paul D, the owner, guide us through the wine tasting. Paul is a fascinating person who generously shared not just his knowledge of the wines, but also stories from his own background. He took his time with us, and we felt genuinely honored by the attention.

My partner and I had lunch at Te Motu last Sunday and honestly, it was unforgettable. The food was flawless — full of flavour and perfectly done — but the wine… that’s on another level. Easily some of the most beautiful wines we’ve ever tried on Waiheke, maybe anywhere. If you’re lucky, like we were, the owner himself will stop by your table and guide you through each pour, sharing stories with so much passion you can’t help but get drawn in. We even tasted vintages going back to the early 2000s — rare, aged wines still full of life and depth. It felt like a privilege to experience. The focaccia deserves its own mention — unreal. We will be back soon

Did the 4 wine tasting for $30. The wines were of great quality and all very enjoyable. The Scottish lady’s (sorry didn’t get your name) service was very knowledgeable and engaging, thank you. I still reckon it’s more than a 7 min walk up the hill though!! 😉

A very pleasant setting for a wine tasting right in the middle of the vineyards! We received explanations about the wines we tasted, which were all excellent. The owners are very friendly; I highly recommend it!
