Home of Tuscany's Renowned Cabernet Blends
A Pioneer in Red Wines Since the 1940s
Tenuta San Guido is a prestigious winery located along the Tyrrhenian coast in the Maremma region of Tuscany, between Leghorn and Grosseto. Founded by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, it was among the first to produce Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1940s. The winery is best known for its flagship wine, Sassicaia, a Bordeaux-style red that has garnered international acclaim, alongside Guidalberto and Le Difese. Tenuta San Guido proudly holds a unique single-estate DOC (Bolgheri Sassicaia) designation for its flagship label, highlighting its significance in the world of 'Super Tuscan' wines.
From Experimentation to Iconic Super Tuscan Wines
The first bottle of Sassicaia was crafted in 1948 as an experimental wine for the Marchese's family. Initially produced in small quantities, it faced challenges due to its heavier profile compared to local wines. However, Mario's son Nicolo and nephew Piero encouraged him to release the 1968 vintage commercially, which marked a turning point for Tenuta San Guido. The wine quickly gained popularity for its rich texture, elegance, and aromatic complexity, establishing the winery as a leader in the Super Tuscan movement.
More Than Just a Winery
Spanning 2,500 hectares, Tenuta San Guido is not only a winery but also a vibrant estate featuring around 100 hectares of vineyards planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Sangiovese. The estate is a haven for biodiversity, hosting the Padule di Bolgheri Wildlife Refuge, a bird sanctuary, and the Razza Dormello-Olgiata thoroughbred horse breeding ground. The vineyards benefit from ideal climatic conditions and nutrient-rich soils, contributing to the production of some of Italy's most celebrated wines.
