Familie Rauen Winery – A Gem in the Scenic Mosel Region

Located in the picturesque Thörnich area of the Mosel region, Familie Rauen Winery is surrounded by lush forests and the meandering Mosel River. The winery benefits from fertile soils and unique microclimates, making it one of Germany's premier wine-growing locations. The Rauen family cultivates vineyards in Detzemer Maximiner Klosterlay, Detzemer Würzgarten, and Thörnicher Ritsch, with four generations actively participating in the winemaking process.

In 1980, Harald Rauen began working alongside his parents in the family business, which was originally named Weingut Eduard Rauen und Sohn. Initially, the winery focused on selling wines in casks to local customers and shops throughout Germany.

By 1990, Harald and Maria Rauen took over the winery and shifted their focus to producing high-quality bottled wines. The growing demand for their wines led to the establishment of a new winery in Thörnich in 1997, rebranded as Weingut Familie Rauen. Today, their wines are enjoyed in the USA, Great Britain, Sweden, Denmark, and Belgium.

Grape Varieties at Familie Rauen Winery

The flagship grape variety at Familie Rauen Winery is Riesling, but the estate also cultivates several other varieties. These include the mineral-rich Rivaner, Pinot Noir, and Dornfelder. In select areas of Thörnicher Ritsch, the winery grows Weißburgunder and Sauvignon Blanc. After careful harvesting, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks. In addition to red, white, and rosé wines, the winery produces acclaimed sparkling wines, brandies, and liqueurs.

Very good location! Very familiar! Excellent wines to test in the apartment's own cellar. This is sufficiently stocked and the small terrace is also very comfortable. An insight into the family business is also provided and a wine tasting is offered. Happy to come back! Best regards from the old vine :)

Since Harald Rauen started marketing directly many, many years ago, the winery has experienced a steep development in quality. A very nice vineyard portfolio that extends across the Ritsch to high-quality, steep slopes in Detzem. Accordingly, it has a great selection of different wines. With Matthias, his son, the topic of spontaneous fermentation and experiments with the use of wood is added. The wines can be recognized by the fingerprint and have a wonderful depth and reflect the terroir. Be sure to plan a visit when you are there.

As Czech lovers of good wines, we had the opportunity to taste Moselle wine from the Rauen family winery during our stay in Františkovy Lázně.🥂 The Riesling Alte Reben Kirchenberg vintage 2020 was really great, so we had to continue the tasting the next evening...🙂 We liked its fresh, fruity and slightly spicy and, above all, very balanced taste. We would like to visit the Moselle region in autumn and ideally taste the Rieslings directly in the Rauen family winery.

I love the wines of the Rauen family! They have character, are exciting and yet not over-the-top. A beautifully balanced selection of different wines from the individual mountains and grape varieties makes it always exciting to try something new from the Rauen family. And the junior brings in his very own touch. You can taste the tradition, the dedication and the desire for new things with which the wine is produced in family work. A visit is recommended and you can also sleep well in your holiday apartments!
