Where is Heathcote Wine Region

The Heathcote wine region is in Victoria, Australia. The region is situated between the Bendigo and Goulburn Valley wine-producing regions and is situated north of the Great Dividing Range.

History of Heathcote

Heathcote's history is similar to many other small towns of the era - once a bustling gold mining and logging town, bringing people of many different cultures and nationalities, with hopes of making it big. North of the town, out-of-work immigrants found a new source of gold by developing land for farming, grazing, and vineyards. Henning Rathjen was one of the earliest German settlers to arrive in the Colbinabbin area, in present day Heathcote wine region. He planted one of the earliest vineyards in the region, before the vine louse, phylloxera arrived. This was in response to a period when people thought that grape vines should grow everywhere. Hops soon followed suit and they became a lucrative venture. The land was used for agricultural purposes. To the north-east of Heathcote, Italian immigrants went on to plant more vineyards, some of which still exist today. A more recent innovation in the Heathcote wine region has been planting vines. Vines that were planted much earlier contribute to some of the most well-known wines in Heathcote, both abroad and at home. They say a landowner leaves his or her mark on the land, and that's clear to see on this walking trail. It takes you from the old homes of some of Australia's early settlers, all the way to our newest vines and wines, at Heathcote Wines.

Terrior of Heathcote

Heathcote wine region has different climates and topography, which lead to variations in rainfall. Northern regions get less rainfall than the southern ones and are drier. The temperature is also cooler further south. Heathcote has strong red soil which is good for retaining water. The terroirs are also determined by the climate, sunlight and rainfall in this region, meaning the conditions are perfect for growing grapes. Mt. Camel Range's soil is quite special: the Cambrian Greenstone, rich in clay particles, has given it excellent structure. The two flagship vines are Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, which have been blended to create Australian wines with GI labels. They have a dark, inky colour and contain deep characteristics.

Heathcote Characteristics

Heathcote wine region has a reputation for producing some of the finest shiraz in the world. Heathcote wines are characterized by their deep, dark fruit and inky, inky color. They're well-balanced with a touch of acidity and tannin at the right levels to complement the fruit. These characteristics are largely a result of the skills in making wine and the diversity of the vineyards as well. Each vineyard has its very own "terroir" which is what makes each one so special.
