The History of Malvasia delle Lipari DOC wine region

The history of the Malvasia delle Lipari wine region traces back to ancient times. It has been producing wines since the time of the Greeks and Romans. It is believed that the Greeks planted the first vines on Mount Etna in 1600 BC, and they were probably introduced to Sicily by Greek settlers when they colonized it. The first mention of Malvasia wines dates back to 400 BC, when Dionysus wrote about them in his book “De Vinis”. Since the Middle Ages, the Malvasia wine region has lived its ups and downs, flourishing during Christian leadership and facing dramatic effects due to Arabic invasions. Nonetheless, it could survive and got the status of DOC(Denominazione di Origine Controllata) in 1973. The Malvasia delle Lipari has been an essential part of the Sicilian culture for many centuries and will continue to be in the future.

Malvasia delle Lipari terroir

Located next to the Vulcano island, Malvasia delle Lipari terroir is volcanic, which they believe has much to offer if properly looked after. The Malvasia delle Lipari soil is black, sandy, volcanic, deep, and therefore fertile, rich in micro and macro elements. The climate is the Mediterranean, with long, warm summers and mild winters with no threats of frost. Mediterranean breezes are frequent in the region, and sunny days notably prevail throughout the year. Also, there is a great difference in diurnal temperature, which is vital for maintaining the right balance between the acidity and sweetness of the wine. The vineyards are situated on terraces facing the southwest coast of the sea.

Malvasia delle Lipari wine characteristics

Malvasia delle Lipari wine is typically made from Malvasia grapes and they vary in their degree of sweetness. You will find dry Malvasia Delle Liparis that are often light-bodied and has delicate aromas. These wines are often consumed as an aperitif or with the main courses.

Sweet Malvasia delle Lipari is known as Dolce Naturale which has a higher level of residual sugar and is mainly consumed with desserts. This style was called "sirop de soufre... le vin du diable"("sulfur syrup... the devil's wine") by French writer Guy de Maupassant.

Malvasia delle Lipari Liquoroso is even sweeter version than Dolce Naturale. This style is the result of fortification. The wine reaches 20% of alcohol level(ABV) and must be aged in barrel for six months. Liquoso style has more intensified grape favours. You will be able to find the flavours such as apricot, tamarind, figs, orange, orange zest, candied fruit, sweet dates, caramel, honey, and Passitos can even have herbaceous notes of lavender and thyme.

Malvasia delle Lipari wines are not only highly diversified, produced mainly from one grape variety, but also express that sweet, dessert wines can be fresh and mineral.
