Wines of the Upper Pannon Region

The Mor wine region is known for its wonderful medieval wine making traditions and techniques that have stood the test of time. Although new generations of wine makers have come to the region, the strongest influence is still of historical methods.

The climate of Mor is typical of that in the northern parts of Transdanubia. The weather is mainly cool with relatively high rainfall. On the southern and south western sides of the hills of More, more favourable meso and microclimates can be found which create conditions perfect for the growing of vines.

The Mor soils are mostly formed over loose quaternary sediments, with slop debris and loam formed over oligocene sand. Across the region there are also deposits of luvisol brown soils over loess, missed with limestone debris, brown soils, dolomite and red earth.

Light, Refreshing Wines of Mor Wine Region

The wines of Mor are well known for their freshness and floral aromatics. In these wines, calcareous minerality is common, as well as a high level of acidity which can sometimes make the wines seem sharp. Most of the wines of Mor benefit from oak aging as this brings out the noble flavours and makes the wine far more characterful.

The most commonly planted grape varietal in Mor is the Ezerjo which is a local Hungarian varietal that is used to make dry and botrytized wines. Ezerjo wines are light, crisp and refreshing and are designed for early consumption. Despite this, because the grape ripens late on the vine, it is also suitable for the production of sweet wines.

Besides Ezerjo, wines in Mor are also made from aromatic grape varietals such as Oraszrizling.
