Riverland wine region is a South Australian geographical indication located between the bends of the magnificent Murray River and the broad fringe of the Great Australian Outback. The area is Australia's greatest wine producer and is renowned as the "powerhouse of Australian wine," producing over a quarter of the total wine produced in the country. However, the region is seeing an increase in the number of boutique wineries focusing on premium wines and planting Mediterranean grape varieties that are new to the region. Riverland is the only region in South Australia's Lower Murray zone. Where is the Riverland wine region?

Riverland wine region is located in the Lower Murray zone in South Australia. The region lies 75km east of Victoria and 200km northeast of Adelaide. It usually takes around 2 hours to reach the southernmost part of Riverland from Adelaide. The region is 4105 sq km in size and vines are planted on 22,032 hectares. The mighty Murray river winds across the region from east to west which is the lifeblood providing its vineyards with much-needed water.  Renmark, Berri, Loxton, Waikerie, Barmera, and Monash are some of the major town centers of Riverland. 

History of the Riverland wine region

The Riverland area was inhabited by Meru people, Aboriginal Australian people, long before the British colonized the area in the 1830s. Renmark is the first district established by the Chaffey Brothers in 1887. The development of viticulture and winemaking in the Riverland wine region is done by the immigrants from Prussia in the mid-1850s. Winemaking was a challenge during the initial attempts due to the unfamiliar Australian climate. After 1960, the region soon became the major wine-making district with peaked prices and large exports. Riverland now produces more than 50% of total wine production in South Australia.

Riverland wine region enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate with some temperate elements. The region is slightly warmer than Adelaide with an average temperature of 24.3 degrees Celsius. The Riverland wine region is well irrigated by the Murray river and has an average rainfall of 260mm. The soil in the region is red, sandy, and loamy which responds well to a wide range of grape varieties. The region is home to more than 85 grape varieties and is still rising as modern winemakers are experimenting with new varietals. The vineyards are heavily influenced by two types of soils: river valley soil (sandy and clay particles) and Mallee soil (lime and clay layers). The adequate water supply, healthy soil, and microclimate are ideal for vine growth while preserving flavor, aroma, and organoleptic qualities.
