The Story of Château Maine Gazin

Château Maine Gazin is a family-owned vineyard and winery in the ancient village of Plassac (33390) in the Bordeaux wine region. Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc are planted to a density of 6,000 vines/ Ha on limestone clay soils. The property slopes North-South and overlooks the Gironde River. The terroir in the area has a long history dating back to the 1st century with the Romans producing wine and shipping out on the Gironde. It is a beautiful location with excellent terroir that receives full sun and where the vines gaze over the Gironde River.

Geoff & Marion Cook came to France from Sydney, Australia to find such a property in 2014. They had both retired but really had their hearts set on making good wine in the best region in the world. Chateau Maine Gazin was purchased in April 2015 and the vineyard was completely replanted. The winery has also undergone significant renovation, all with the purpose of making great wine.

Wine Making at the Château

Chateau Maine Gazin is a 7.5Ha vineyard and winery located 50kms north of Bordeaux, in the ancient Gallo-Roman village of Plassac where winemaking dates back to the 1st Century.

Maine Gazin has limestone/clay soils that combine with the moderating influences of the Gironde to provide excellent terroir for red wine production. The vineyard is planted to a density of 6 000 vines per hectare with Merlot, Petit Verdot & Cabernet Franc. The rows are 2m wide and trellising is higher to take advantage of the north-south orientation to sun exposure. The first harvest for Geoff & Marion was in 2018 and then after 2019 harvest began the transition to Organic. Production 350 Hls per year.

This castle has just been taken over by an Australian couple who are in the process of renovating it in the vineyard, the winery and the buildings are quality work, I am convinced that their 20 will also be of high quality
