The Origin of Kern Winery

Kern Winery was established in 2012 by Pal Kern and Lena Szavercsenko, who shared a deep passion for winemaking. Their goal was to bridge the gap between traditional and modern wine production, focusing on reviving nearly forgotten grape varieties through innovative and gentle techniques. This commitment to quality and heritage sets Kern Winery apart in the Hungarian wine landscape.

Wine Regions of Kern Winery

Kern Winery cultivates grapes in two prominent wine regions of Hungary: Balatonszőlős and Tokaj. The winery's first plots were acquired in Balatonszőlős, followed by additional vineyards in the historic Tokaj region. Covering a total of 10 hectares (5 hectares in Lake Balaton and 5 hectares in Tokaj), these vineyards benefit from unique microclimates ideal for grape growing. Tokaj, known for its rich viticulture history dating back nearly a thousand years, was recognized as the world's first closed wine region in 1737, ensuring strict regulations for wine production. Balatonszőlős, located on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, offers a perfect environment for crafting exceptional wines.

First Sparkling Wines of the Region

Kern Winery is proud to produce the first sparkling wines in Upper Hungary, showcasing the region's potential for high-quality sparkling wine. With a focus on traditional methods and modern techniques, these wines reflect the unique terroir of the area. Wine enthusiasts can look forward to tasting these innovative creations that honor the past while embracing the future of winemaking.

Very cute winery, the bubbles are amazing! Nothing could be better in hot summer day than freshly opened ice cold sparkling wine! The tapas board is highly recommended. Thank you for the very attentive 5* service! We will be back!

We (plus our then-small baby) visited Kern 3 years ago for an impromptu tasting. We were too early in the year for food, but the lovely lady nonetheless gave us snacks and good recommendations for the wines. It was a very pleasant hour, sitting in their garden with the sun on our faces as we tried a few of their delicious wines. The prices were very fair and, despite there being a bit of a language barrier, we managed quite well. We took several bottles home 😁 We're hopefully returning to Tarcal this year, now with our toddler and our second small baby, and we're looking forward to visiting Kern again!

Really cool place to try wine. The hospitality here was just top notch. In contrast to Tokaj itself. The people here were really keen on us. You feel welcome here. They made an effort to understand us in English. That wasn't the case in Tokaj. But here I was really positively surprised. Ideal for trying wine from the region and sampling a bit of tapas.

It was an amazing experience! We ordered a wine tasting online, which Paul, the owner of the vineyard, conducted perfectly: he told us a lot about the available vineyards, revealed the intricacies of making sparkling wine. Even a person who doesn't like wine liked the taste of it, so I think that says a lot about the production of his own. The evening was cold, so the owner lit a fire. We also got snacks to go with the wine:) We were celebrating a birthday, so upon request we got the opportunity to cut a bottle of wine with a sword, which delighted the birthday boy! Hearty recommendation to visit this vineyard and taste some amazing wine while on this side of Lake Balaton!
