A Family Winery in Bordeaux Focused on Community and Sustainability
Four Generations of Family Winemaking
At Vignobles Arbo, winemaking is a cherished family tradition that dates back to the early 20th century. Bernadette Arbo’s great-great-grandfather, Amand Puyache, purchased this beautiful vineyard in the north-west of Bordeaux just before World War I. Tragically, he lost his life in the war before he could fulfill his dream of running a winery. Today, his legacy lives on through the exceptional Bordeaux wines produced here. When Bernadette inherited the vineyard, she and her husband Joseph made the bold decision to leave the local cooperative and revive Amand’s vision.
A Diverse Range of Bordeaux Wines
Vignobles Arbo spans 40 hectares across two distinct appellations. The Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux features ten hectares dedicated solely to red wines, while the Francs Cotes de Bordeaux also focuses on reds, with two hectares reserved for white wine production using Semillon and Sauvignon grapes. The red wines are crafted from Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc. The grapes are harvested using machines, allowing for nighttime work when necessary. By sourcing barrels from various coopers, the winery achieves a rich diversity of flavors and aromas in their wines.
Commitment to Sustainability and Bee-Friendly Practices
Bernadette and Joseph prioritize sustainable practices that protect the environment. They have not used pesticides for over a decade and carefully select eco-friendly packaging. The spaces between the vine rows are planted with grass, creating a welcoming habitat for bees. Vignobles Arbo also values community involvement, employing several young locals to provide them with valuable work experience at the winery.
