Nikolaus Köwerich winery: in Leiwen on the Moselle
Nikolaus Köwerich has been running the winery together with his wife Anette Köwerich in the beautiful wine-growing village of Leiwen on the Moselle since 1994. His forefathers were winemakers and gave him a passion for wine. The Köwerich family appeared in the village books as early as 1525. The bestsellers include the wine “For Fairies and Elves” and “Insight N ° 1”. The family cultivates 10 ha and produce 100% Riesling.
Their maxim is: “And wine to gladden the heart of man” (Psalm 104,15)
Discover the queen among the white wines at this winery
Vines have been cultivated on the Moselle for almost two millennia, and the Riesling grape variety – the “Queen of the White Vines” – has been cultivated since the 15th century. This capricious grape variety finds the best prerequisites here on the Moselle: blue Devonian slate and a long vegetation period, the slopes on the Moselle with intensive sun exposure, and the best winemakers who pursue only one goal: to produce excellent wines. The Köwerichs vineyards live fully in the rhythm of nature. Nature indicates when the vines have to be cut, when the soil has to be loosened when leaves have to be removed and grapes reduced and when the grapes are finally ready to be harvested
Wines for for dreamers and heroes
Köwerichs wines are named “Für Feen und Elfen” (for fairys end elfs), “Für Träumer und Helden” (for dreamers and heroes), “Fräulin Mosel” (Mrs. Mosel) and “Herr Mosel” (Mister Mosel). The winery is specialised in fruity, filigree rierslings. They are recommended by national and international journals and wine guides such as Gault&Millau, Falstaff, Jansis Robinson, etc.
