Introduction

The German name for Vienna is 'Wien'. Rearrange that and you get wine. If that hasn't convinced you already to join our tour, then consider that Vienna is surrounded by renowned wine regions, from the sun-baked Burgenland to the southeast and the famous Wachau Valley to the west. The province of Lower Austria is considered the cradle of Austrian viticulture, so we want to take you to the beautiful vineyards of its Thermal Region, just south of Vienna. Home to traditionally quaint wine villages and unique wines, we showcase this lesser known yet truly gorgeous Austrian wine region…

Vienna Woods Wine Tour - Winter Itinerary (Nov-Mar)

  • 9:40am - Meet & greet
We meet at the main entrance of Wien Mitte train station for initial introductions before boarding our train. Head to the u-bahn station ‘Landstraße’ on the U3 orange or the U4 green lines.
  • Train ride to the Thermal Region
Our train brings us directly to the vineyards of the Thermal Region and seemingly right back into the middle ages…
  • The past, present and future of Austrian vititculture
With a welcome glass of sekt in your hand, and in the ideal setting within the grounds of Austria’s second oldest wine making institution, you’ll discover how monks became wine pioneers of their time, spreading their expertise across Europe and forming new wine regions as they went.
  • Short vineyard walk between villages
We then walk for around 20 minutes through the pretty vineyard landscape, as we head to arguably one of Austria’s most historic wine making villages…
  • Traditional Austrian lunch in Gumpoldskirchen
We go for lunch at a local ‘Heurige’ or wine tavern (lunch not included).
  • Wine tasting and Q&A with local vintner
The highlight of the day is our visit to a local wine maker in Gumpoldskirchen to taste the full range of local varieties. This is a wonderfully intimate, unhurried experience, with plenty of opportunities to discuss all aspects of viticulture.
  • 5/5:30pm - Arrive back to Vienna by train
The tour ends with a short train ride back to the city, giving you plenty time to relax before your evening activities
