History of Cachapoal Valley Wine

The wine history of Chile starts back in the 16th century, when the Spanish conquistadors planted the first vines from shipboard stock. The wine industry has changed greatly from time to time. Noble European grape varieties were introduced in the mid-19th century. Then came significant technological advances in the 1980s, which caused a huge rise in Chilean wine exports over the past 30 years. All of this sets the scene for how this sustainable industry has developed and thrived. Chile does not have phylloxera, meaning it has lots of different wine styles and its wine also has a wide range of natural conditions.

Terrior of Cachapoal Valley

Cachapoal valley has a Mediterranean climate. Most of the rain in Cachapoal falls in winter, making for a long growing season and enough time for grapes to ripen without it compromising quality. This allows them to produce the best quality grapes possible. Cachapoal has a gravelly and sandy soil that was transferred over time to the valley slopes of the Andes.Free-draining soil has a tendency to be less fertile and have few drainage conduits, leading to small, dense berries that produce structured wines. Cachapoal soils are a bit more fertile loam, which some local winemakers say is ideal for growing Chile's iconic variety- Carmenère. Parts of Cachapoal with less effective drainage can be exploited similarly for growing varieties that need less water.
